NORAD takes over ’Peg skies

If you saw fighter planes locked in battle miles above your head on Thursday, don’t worry — NORAD was just conducting testing over Winnipeg.

Royal Canadian Air Force and United States Air Force aircraft were flying over the city, testing NORAD’s interception and identification procedures — just in case. During the flight, NORAD-controlled CF-18 Hornet fighter aircraft flew in close proximity to a USAF C21 Learjet.

The joint U.S. and Canadian command is charged with warning us when the planes aren’t supposed to be there, and ensuring the security of both nations.
