MAKS 2011 air show kicks off at Moscow

The 10th Moscow International Air Show (MAKS) has begun its work at Zhukovsky airfield outside Moscow.

The show will be open until August 21, 2011 inclusive, and from 19 August, everyone will be able to get to the airfield. Until Friday, the show is going to operate behind closed doors for professionals and participants, officials and accredited journalists only.

The Russian Air Show has been held in Russia since 1993. About 800 companies from 40 countries worldwide are participating in the 2011MAKS show. Viewers at Zhukovsky will be able to watch Su-35, MiG-35, Su-30, AN-158, Su-47 Berkut ("Golden Eagle") aircraft, Ka-226, Mi-8MTV-5 helicopters, and the World War II aircraft. The public will for the first time see a promising multipurpose frontline fighter designed by Sukhoi bureau, T-50 (PAK FA). The aerobatic teams Swifts, Russian Knights, Falcons of Russia and Russia are going to participate in the show program, too.

According to preliminary estimates, business contracts worth more than twenty billion dollars are going to be signed during the air show at Zhukovsky. Two years ago, during the MAKS 2009 show, deals worth 10 billion U.S. dollars were made. The details of the current long-term contracts are practically held secret.

As previously reported, the European company Airbus was going to announce an updated forecast for the civil aircraft sales in Russia at the MAKS 2011 show. In 2010, Airbus estimated aircraft demand from Russian companies in the amount of 900 until 2029. This estimate did not take into account the demand for aircraft from the air carriers of the CIS countries. According to the American company Boeing’s estimate, Russian and CIS airlines will buy 1080 planes in 2030.
