Italian Police Orders Two AW139 Helicopters

Italian Police Orders Two AW139 Helicopters

AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce that the Italian Police has placed an order for two AW139 intermediate twin helicopters.

The contract is partially funded by the UE FRONTEX programme aimed at supporting coordination and development of the European Union’s border management. Also included in the contract is a comprehensive support and training package for crews and maintenance personnel plus options for an additional six helicopters to be exercised within late 2012/early 2013. These aircraft will be used to perform a range of duties including law enforcement, border patrol and other public utility applications. The two helicopters on order are expected to be delivered in the first half of 2013 and based at Pratica di Mare Airbase, close to Rome.

The AW139 was chosen by the customer among other competing bidders after a comprehensive evaluation process proving the best value for money solution with outstanding quality and capabilities to meet its demanding mission and safety requirements. The replacement of old helicopter models with AW139s supports the fleet modernization plans of the Italian Police and benefits the communities they serve across national borders. The AW139 has also been chosen by and is in service with the Italian Coast Guard, Guardia di Finanza (Customs and Border protection) and the Italian Air Force. The Italian Police joining the list of Italian Government’s operators of the AW139 will enable it to benefit from the advantages of existing logistics, support and operational synergies in delivering rescue and patrol missions across the nation. The Italian Police AW139 configuration will also feature HD FLIR, satellite communication system, searchlight, mission console.

The AW139 is the world best selling helicopter and the only new generation aircraft in its category today in service. Almost 170 customers from more than 50 countries have ordered around 640 AW139 helicopters to perform a wide range of roles including law enforcement, homeland security, border/coast guard duties, emergency medical services, fire fighting, search and rescue, VIP/corporate transport, offshore transport and passenger shuttle services. A number of law enforcement and border security agencies have selected and operate the AW139 globally in several countries including the USA, Japan and China.
