HyperMach Now Aiming for Mach 4 Bizjet

HyperMach Aerospace’s planned 20-seat supersonic business jet (SSBJ), dubbed the SonicStar, will be able to fly at Mach 4.0, the company said Friday in Dubai.

This is faster than the Mach 3.6 top speed announced when the proposed V-tailed aircraft was first revealed in June at the Paris Air Show. At Mach 4, the SonicStar would be able to fly from New York to Dubai in just 2 hours 20 minutes. According to HyperMach CEO Richard Lugg, recent analysis of data by partner Eagle Harbor Technologies showed that the higher speed can be achieved while the aircraft meets requirements for a high thrust-to-weight ratio engine, reduced emissions and no or minimal sonic boom.

HyperMach said the sonic boom will be minimized by an electromagnetically induced plasma wave that “absorbs” pressure waves. The other key enabling technology of the SonicStar is the H-Magjet 4000-X series engine, which is being developed by Portland, Maine-based SonicBlue, of which Lugg is also the chairman. Its developer says the SonicStar is scheduled to fly in 2021, with certification possible by 2025. The company also revealed the price of the supersonic business jet: $180 million (2011 $). Meanwhile, HyperMach continues to seek more investors and partners for the program.
