Exelis producing F/A-18 components
GE Aviation of Ohio has tapped ITT Exelis to produce generator control modules for U.S. F/A-18 fighter jets, Exelis reported.
The electronic generator control modules are critical components of the Boeing manufactured aircraft. Fitted on both sides of the aircraft the modules control power requirements and can back each other up in case of module failure.
"This demanding application required us to design high-power components to go in small spaces that wouldn't overheat," said Rich Sorelle, vice president and general manager of Exelis Electronic Systems' integrated electronic warfare systems business. "Because of our success during design, development and early production, we earned preferred supplier status with GE Aviation."
The contract to produce 375 modules is valued at $5.7 million. Exelis said deliveries from its Electronic Systems operation in New York will be made through the beginning of 2015.
Exelis said it has produced more than 2,000 such systems in the past using technologies that reduce their size and weight.
