HELICOPTER 16 combat capable. Total ε16+ Helicopters.

  • (Note: The army fielded six MD530s recently to bolster light attack and reconnaissance roles; earlier plans for an additional batch of 6 units were reported as active requirements),,.

Medium Transport (Helicopters):

  • (Note: While the Army historically planned a transport squadron for the S-61A-4 Nuri, the service retired its last three operational airframes recently. For 2026, tactical transport relies on support from the Royal Malaysian Air Force's H225M fleet),,.

AIR DEFENCE (Organic to Army) Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM):

  • SAM (Point-defence): 15 Jernas (Rapier 2000); Starstreak; Anza-II; HY-6 (FN-6); 9K38 Igla.

Anti-Aircraft Guns:

  • Self-propelled (SP) with 20mm: K263.
  • Towed with 35mm & 40mm: 16 GDF-005; 36 L40/70.

ARMAMENT

  • Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM): Ingwe (mounted on AV8 Gempita); Baktar Shikan (HJ-8); SS.11; Eryx; Metis-M1,.
  • Air-to-Surface Weapons: Organic rockets and machine gun pods for MD530G and AW109.

Note: By 2026, the Royal Malaysian Army Aviation operates as a specialized tactical wing focused on armed reconnaissance and ground support. A major modernization goal announced by the Ministry of Defence includes the acquisition of 24 new helicopters starting from 2026 to replace legacy utility and transport assets across the armed forces. The force is also integrating more advanced unmanned systems for battlefield ISR to offset capability gaps in maritime and border surveillance,.
