BAGHDAD - A US F-16 fighter jet crashed Monday with one pilot on board as it was flying in support of ground forces fighting just northwest of Baghdad, the US air force said.
The plane crashed 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest of the Iraqi capital at 1:35 pm local time (1035 GMT). No cause was given for the crash.
‘A board will be convened to investigate the incident,’ the statement said.
It did not give any details on the condition of the pilot.
Combat jets fly daily missions over Iraq where more than 150,000 American troops are battling to put down a violent insurgency against the US-backed government.
The F-16 ‘Fighting Falcon’ was deployed by the US air force in the 1970s as a multirole fighter and ground-attack jet.
