Embraer commences AMX modifications for the Brazilian Air Force

Embraer has begun modernisation of 53 AMX jets for the Brazilian Air Force, incorporating avionics systems, weaponry and sensors, most of which are manufactured in Brazil.

The first A-1 AMX attack aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force (Forca Aerea Brasileira - FAB) to undergo a mid-life upgrade (MLU) programme arrived at Embraer's Sao Jose dos Campos facility on 31 August 2007.

The goal of the MLU is to keep the FAB's A-1 fleet of 53 aircraft (43 A-1A single-seat and 10 A-1B trainer versions) in service for a further 20 year

Image: In European exercises, the Italo/Brazilian AMX is just the AMX. Not a very modern fighter bomber, but it will do. In Latin America however, Brazil's AMX or A-1as the type is known in the Brazilian Air Force constitutes a by comparison very modern ground attack platform. The Brazilian Air Force despatched five AMX's, one of which was an AMX-T (A-1B) twin seater from its 1°/10° Grupo de Aviaçao from Santa Maria to Mendoza. The other four were of the single seat A-1A variety as seen here. Note the new green/grey camouflage scheme. ( www.cavok-aviation-photos.net)
