China’s J-50 sixth-gen fighter Testing

China’s Sixth-Generation J-50 Fighter Advances with Second Prototype Testing

Shenyang Aircraft Corporation’s tailless stealth jet, designated J-XDS or J-50, enters accelerated flight trials, signaling Beijing’s push to outpace U.S. and European sixth-gen programs.

The second prototype of China’s next-generation stealth fighter, developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC), has been revealed through recent video footage and enthusiast photography. Designated J-XDS or J-50 by defense analysts, the aircraft features a tailless, lambda-wing configuration and is believed to represent China’s most ambitious leap toward sixth-generation airpower.

The second prototype reportedly completed its maiden flight in mid-to-late September 2025, with notable design refinements including the removal of the pitot tube seen on the first prototype. The aircraft was photographed on September 25 by a civilian who allegedly climbed a perimeter wall to capture a close-up view of the jet on the runway.

Flight testing of the J-50 has progressed rapidly, with multiple sorties recorded in September and October. Analysts suggest the program is moving faster than expected, possibly in response to U.S. and European sixth-generation efforts such as NGAD and FCAS.

Latest Developments

• Chinese state-linked media and defense outlets now refer to the aircraft as the “J-50,” indicating a shift from its earlier placeholder designation “J-XDS”.
• High-resolution videos and satellite imagery confirm continued testing at SAC’s facility in Liaoning Province, with at least two prototypes now active.
• The J-50 is expected to feature advanced AI-assisted flight control, sensor fusion, and optionally manned capability, aligning with sixth-gen fighter benchmarks.
• Defense experts speculate the aircraft may incorporate directed energy weapons and drone command capabilities, though official specifications remain classified.
• The Asia Live and Defence Security Asia report that Beijing aims to field an operational sixth-gen platform by 2030, potentially ahead of Western rivals.

Strategic Implications:

The emergence of the J-50 underscores China’s intent to redefine the future battlespace. Its tailless design suggests a focus on stealth, agility, and reduced radar cross-section. If successful, the program could challenge the dominance of U.S. NGAD and Europe’s FCAS, reshaping global airpower dynamics.

With two prototypes already flying and testing intensifying, the J-50 may soon transition from experimental to pre-production status—marking a critical milestone in China’s military aviation roadmap.
