In the Dutch defense structure, all rotary-wing assets are centralized under the Defense Helicopter Command (DHC), which is administratively part of the Air Force but operationally tasked to support Army formations, specifically the 11th Air Mobile Brigade and specialized reconnaissance units.

  • Armoured Reconnaissance: 185 Fennek (Includes variants for forward observation and point-defense).
  • Armoured Personnel Carriers: 200 Boxer (Configured for ambulance, command, and engineering roles).

Strategic Note (2026): By 2026, the Royal Netherlands Army has deeply integrated its aviation and air defense capabilities into a cross-domain NATO framework. Following the 2024 White Paper, the Kingdom has significantly increased its defense budget (surpassing 2% of GDP) to address readiness gaps and modernize equipment. Key priorities include the remanufacturing of the Apache fleet to the AH-64E standard and the acquisition of Leopard 2A8 tanks to enhance ground combat power. The Defense Helicopter Command logistics are highly integrated with domestic industry; specifically, DutchAero and Damen continue to provide maintenance and component support for these high-tech systems. Furthermore, the Army remains a key contributor to NATO’s Enhanced Vigilance Activities, with Patriot air defense batteries frequently deployed to the Alliance’s eastern flank.
