Indonesian Air Force F-27 Crashes in Jakarta

An Indonesian Air Force Fokker F-27 Turboprop plane carrying seven people has crashed into a housing complex in the capital city of Jakarta.

An Indonesian air force plane carrying seven people has crashed into a housing complex in the capital city of Jakarta.

According to the BBC, the aircraft – a Fokker 27 turboprop – was conducting a routine training flight when it hit the Rawajali residential area, near the Halim Perdanakusuma army base in the east of the city. It had been carrying several trainees.

Local TV stations reportedly showed images of the plane’s tail atop a burned house, with a thick cloud of smoke engulfing the complex. Military spokesman Iskandar Sitompul told the Associated Press that all seven passengers were killed in the crash. Three people on the ground, a nanny and the two toddlers she cared for, also were killed.

At least a dozen additional people were injured, the AP said.

Firefighters have been sent to the site, where at least eight houses are burning, according to media reports quoted by Al Jazeera.

Last month 45 people were killed when a Russian Sukhoi Superjet-100 crashed into the side of a volcano south of Jakarta.
